The grapes come from vineyards planted by Thomas Wulf and Valentina Chiarini at Villa Chiarini Wulf, Vetralla, Latium, and Podere Lignano, Pienza, Tuscany.

The production speaks of the places, different and diversified. In Pienza – clayey, silty soil and an arid climate (450m asl); medium textured soil in Tuscia, volcanic tuffa and temperate climate (250m asl).

The company flagship is the grape variety Manzoni bianco (Manzoni cross 6.0.13), selected in the thirtiesby Professor Luigi Manzoni, head of the Wine School of Conegliano, Veneto by crossing two historic varieties, Riesling and Pinot Bianco. It is characterised by short and stubby bunches, small spherical grapes and a rather low yield.

Thomas Wulf, in love with the grape Manzoni bianco, guessed the merits that this grape would develop growing in a “terroir” very different from its beginnings. He was amongst the first, if not the first, to plant this vine in Central Italy. The Pienza vineyard dates back to 1990, while the Vetralla vineyard was created in 2004.

This intuition and the challenge brought together with the Enologist Alberto Marini to make a wine only by Manzoni bianco, gave birth to Fiore di Lignanofrom Pienza and Flores from Vetralla, extraordinarily complex and aromatic wines that unlike most whites develop by aging.

With grape harvest 2011 Villa Chiarini Wulf starts again with a very traditionell way of wine making:The Tuscan grapes are fermented by their own yeasts and also thees white wines will do the ‘malolattica’. Now,you will find in commerce two wines of this type: Fiore di Lignano 2003and the wine named’ 2005.’

Terre di Lignano is product made only by Sangiovese grapes coming from Pienza. Dry red, full bodied and honest, it is at its best transferred to a carafe a few hours before tasting.

From the Vetralla vineyard, in addition to Flores comes also Allegro, a blend of Manzoni bianco and Trebbiano. Red and fragrant Terre di Carabas in which grapes (Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot) with a noticeable prevalence of Cabernet Franc. Ottobre is the intense Cabernet franc aged for six months in new oak casks of 1,500litres.

The Manzoni bianco of Vetralla also gives life to the Flores Vendemmiatardiva, a late harvest wine aged for 8 months in tonneaux.

The wines of Villa Chiarini Wulf, like the rest of the production, are healthy, honest and of high quality.

The monovarietal Grappa Manzoni bianco and Grappa riserva, rough and soft at the same time, come exclusively from the left overs of farm grapes skilfully transformed at the distillery Nannoni situated in Paganico, Tuscany.
